Khirokitia History
The picturesque village of Khirokitia straddles a ridge overlooking the valley of the Maroni River towards the southern coast of the island about 6 km from the sea.
Khirokitia is characterized by the intense presence of historical elements that go back to the most distant past in the history of Cyprus. On the east side of the village, lies the ancient Neolithic settlement of Khirokitia, which dates back 9000 years.
The settlement is surrounded by a strong wall of stones 2.5m thick and 3m at its highest preserved level. It is regarded as the first major community and the most important Neolithic archaeological site in Cyprus.
The Neolithic Cypriots lived in circular houses made from undressed stone, sun-dried mud bricks and clay, these interesting buildings can still be seen today.
The famous battle of Khirokitia was fought in 1426 between King Janus, who ruled Cyprus from 1398 to 1432, and the Mameluks.
On the west side of the old village there is a fine view of the plain of Khirokitia where the battle took place, the buildings involved can still easily be seen (although some have been partly rebuilt since the time of the battle). The battle marked the end of the Lusignian monarchy in Cyprus.
The local Community Council has created an amazing Nature Trail, which travels through Khirokitia, where you can admire the picturesque character of the community, the paved small streets and the traditional houses of the village.
